Breckenridge Colorado Ski Resorts: Skiing And Resort Accommodations

Published: August 21, 2007

Colorful Colorado is famous for the Rocky Mountain culture. The gorgeous peaks and deep valleys have led to the formation of many Colorado ski resorts. Offering year-round entertainment and hiking, Colorado ski resorts are still tailored toward the skiing community.

Breckenridge is the second largest skiing destination among Colorado ski resorts, trailing only Vail. Affectionately known as "Breck," it is home to four mountains with 155 trails, totaling a skiing area of 2,300 acres. Among the resort accommodations are 29 ski lifts. Since it covers such a large area, a snow report and weather update can be found on the resorts winter homepage. Also on the website are details of the skier responsibility code, freeride terrain responsibility code, and helmet recommendations for young skiers enrolling in classes.

The skier responsibility code covers general rules such as observing posted signs and warnings, stopping only out of trail obstruction, keeping out of closed areas, and yielding the right of way to skiers ahead. Skier responsibility codes such as these are staples at many Colorado ski resorts. The freeride terrain responsibility code is another must-read. It pertains to terrain variations such as pipes and jumps. The code encourages the use of spotters, and states users should look before leaping in order to avoid serious injury. All skiers are to responsible for maintaining body control at all times on the slopes and in the air. Helmets are to be worn by children 14 years of age and younger attending ski and ride school at Colorado ski resorts.

Most Colorado ski resorts celebrate winter season November through April, weather permitting. The resort averages 300 days of sunshine per year. Among Colorado ski resorts, Breck offers some of the best resort accommodations. There is a free ride system, winding from the resorts base to free parking lots and along the perimeter of town. The bus stops at a few other popular attractions such as the ice rink, city market and the local recreation center. Another draw for visitors is the close ski community; the population is a mere 3,192. Many visitors marvel at the cozy town great for long days on the slopes, followed by mellow nights walking around. There are many local restaurants and village shops that combine for a great vacation experience. Along with the many resort accommodations, this small town atmosphere is a skiers paradise.

Like most Colorado ski resorts, there are many lodging options available. On the winter homepage is a pull down menu divided by type, allowing visitors to search for lodging meeting their needs. Among the options are hotels, bed & breakfasts, private homes and condominiums. Condominiums range from studio to six bedroom. Many lodging choices fall along the free shuttle route or are within walking distance of the slopes. Depending on the chosen place of lodging, there are many amenities available. Hot tubs, pools, private decks, happy hour and fireplaces are among the amenities available at area lodging.

The only negative reviews are in regards to the long lines on weekends. Because it is such a popular place among the Colorado ski resorts, crowds can be expected. However, Summit County has provided a free shuttle for traveling within the county. For the travelers wishing to visit other Colorado ski resorts, the shuttle is available to nearby Keystone and Copper Mountain resorts. The shuttle also visits the towns of Silverthorne, Frisco and Dillon.

It is no surprise Breckenridge is the second most popular resort among all of the Colorado ski resorts. The resort offers the options and advantages of the larger Colorado ski resorts in a small town setting. Of all Colorado ski resorts, visitors looking for great skiing and a relaxing atmosphere will find it at Breck.
